CTD312 Contemporary Theology 4The term Renaissance means “new birth” and describes the intellectual awakening that took place in Europe after the Middle Ages. The period was also termed a “revival of learning.” The dating of this era, while difficult to delineate precisely, can be generally identified as from 1350 to 1650. The Renaissance “substituted a modern secular individualistic view of life for the medieval religious corporate approach to life…Emphasis was placed upon the glory of man instead of upon the glory of God.” Interest in man and the world rather than in God and heaven developed. With the new interest in man and his capabilities came the reliance upon human reason rather than divine revelation. Man was now the focus of the universe, not God.
