What is a Practicum?
A practicum experience provides the student with the application of classroom theory in a workplace environment. It reinforces competencies learned throughout a student’s academic progression, such as; analytical skills, research processes, problem-solving and interpersonal dynamics. Students have the opportunity for degree-related work experience to promote insight about contemporary issues in their chosen ministry fields. Thus, a practicum at GCU can serve as a “ministry preview” and assist the student in a ministry based on personal observation instead of relying solely on varying resources.
The student will assumes a proactive role in finding and securing a practicum or internship site in an area relevant to their degree program. By participating in a practicum, you will begin to build your credentials, establish ministerial contacts and references, and increase your ministerial opportunities upon graduation. Practicum opportunities are available at many church or Para church organizations, local or international.
Practicum requirement:
1. Students will be required to serve 40 hours of in a ministry related to their field of studies.
2. The student will write a research paper of 1500 words minimum detailing the experience.
3. Winter and spring practicum can be deferred to summer, thus students will need to complete a minimum of 80 hours for fulltime students.
4. Practicum has four credit hours each.
